About

I trained as an architect and spent my first eight years in larger offices, mostly on housing. The practice began in 2014 with a single small commission: a reading room in a former office.

The work since has stayed small on purpose. Most projects are under 500 square metres, and most begin with an existing building rather than an empty site. That usually means the first months are spent measuring, photographing and reading archives before anything is drawn.

The work index collects observation studies of buildings designed by others, drawn and annotated from photographs. They are how we test ideas before a client’s building is on the table. Demo note: the photographs are CC0 images by other photographers, and the studies are sample text.

How we work

• Survey before design. We measure by hand as well as by scanner, because measuring by hand forces decisions.
• Furniture before services. People go where the furniture is; heating and lighting follow people.
• Say what we changed. New work is distinguishable from old. Repairs are visible when you look for them.

Working together
